The Core Difference

A speed test — whether run over WiFi or Ethernet — measures the same three things: download speed, upload speed, and ping. What changes is how your device is physically connected to your router while that test runs.

Because of this, an Ethernet speed test is generally considered the most accurate way to measure the actual speed your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is delivering to your home. A WiFi speed test measures something slightly different: the speed you're actually getting on the device in your hand, wireless limitations included.

Why WiFi Speed Test Results Are Usually Lower

If your Ethernet speed test shows 300 Mbps but your WiFi speed test on the same device shows 180 Mbps, that's not a fluke. It's how wireless networking works.

1. Signal Distance and Walls

The farther your device is from your router, and the more walls, floors, or furniture in between, the weaker the signal — and the lower your usable speed.

2. Wireless Interference

WiFi shares airwaves with other networks in range, Bluetooth devices, microwaves, baby monitors, and even thick walls with metal or wiring. All of it can degrade signal quality.

3. Band and Standard Limitations

Older routers or devices using the 2.4GHz band max out at lower speeds than the newer 5GHz or 6GHz bands. Even with a fast internet plan, an outdated WiFi standard will cap what you can actually achieve wirelessly.

4. Device Load

WiFi bandwidth is shared across every connected device. If multiple phones, laptops, smart TVs, and smart-home gadgets are active at once, each one gets a smaller slice of available speed.

5. Router Hardware

Cheaper or older routers simply can't push the same wireless throughput as modern ones, regardless of how fast your internet plan is.

Ethernet skips almost all of these variables entirely, which is why it's treated as the "ground truth" measurement.
