If you've ever finished a speed test showing "100 Mbps" and then watched a 100 MB file take way longer than one second to download, you've run into one of the most common mix-ups in tech: Mbps vs MBps.

Internet Service Providers advertise speed in Mbps because bigger numbers sound better in marketing — "500 Mbps" is a lot more eye-catching than "62.5 MBps."

But your operating system — Windows, macOS, your browser's download bar — reports file transfer progress in MBps or simply MB, because that's how file sizes are measured. A photo is "4 MB," not "32 Mb."

100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MBps

So a 1,000 MB (1 GB) file, in ideal conditions, would take:

1,000 MB ÷ 12.5 MBps = 80 seconds

Not 10 seconds, even though "100" is a big-sounding number. This is the calculation people miss — and it's the biggest reason people think their internet connection is underperforming when it's actually running exactly at its rated speed.
